A trocar is a pointed instrument used to pierce the body wall, while a cannula is the hollow tube that remains in place to serve as a port for instruments. The combination of a trocar and cannula is a fundamental tool in minimally invasive surgery, like laparoscopy.
  • Obturator (trocar): The sharp, piercing part of the device. It is inserted into the body to create the initial opening. Trocars can be bladed (cutting), blunt, or optical (with a lens for visualization during insertion).
  • Cannula (sleeve): The rigid, hollow tube that houses the obturator during insertion. After the obturator is removed, the cannula remains in place, providing a stable access port into the body cavity.
  • Seal: A valve system at the top of the cannula prevents gas from leaking out of the body cavity while allowing surgical instruments to pass through
